The climate emergency represents a growing threat to national security in the United States.

In addition, rising temperatures, drought and extreme weather are likely to lead to more instability and conflict, especially in developing countries, according to new reports from intelligence agencies, the White House and the Department of Defense.

These reports describe

an alarming situation with increasingly serious dangers

caused by radical changes in the global climate.

They foresee that countries will compete for food and fresh water as they face transboundary waves of migration.

Reports by Joe Biden's Administration come as world leaders plan to meet next month in Glasgow, Scotland, to discuss the crucial fight against climate change.

A new climate report by the National Intelligence Council, the first of its kind, warns that climate change will exacerbate global tensions and

names 11 countries that are particularly at risk from climate change

if current trends continue.

These are Afghanistan, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, North Korea, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia, and Iraq.

"We estimate that climate change will increasingly exacerbate the risks to the national security of the United States as the physical impacts and geopolitical tensions increase on how to respond to the challenge," indicated in the report entitled

"The intensification of physical effects will exacerbate geopolitical flashpoints, particularly after 2030, and key countries and regions will face increasing risks of instability and the need for humanitarian assistance," it said.

The report reflects a consensus of all intelligence agencies in the country.

In addition to the 11 countries mentioned, the intelligence report also warns that climate change is likely to lead to greater instability in Central Africa and the small island states of the Pacific Ocean, which it described as "

two of the most vulnerable areas on the planet

In the Middle East, declining revenues from oil and other fossil fuels will likely put countries in the region under greater pressure as they suffer from extreme heat and longer droughts, according to the report.

A White House report indicates that migration driven by climate change could put further pressure on America's partners and allies, because

migrants will likely seek refuge in stable, democratic countries

that adhere to international conventions on asylum.

It is also said that China, Russia and other adversaries could try to harness the effects of climate change to direct migrants to the United States and its allies.

"Migration related to climate change could cause greater instability among US allies and partners and therefore relative strength to adversary states," states the White House report on the impact of climate change on the migration.

Enemies could incite or promote irregular migration to destabilize US allies and partners.

Without an effective strategy from the United States and Europe, China, Russia, and other governments could increase their influence by supporting countries that have trouble channeling discontent related to migration.

"Russia also sees some benefits in the destabilizing effects of large-scale migration to the European Union, especially in terms of increasing xenophobia and anti-liberal political parties that are skeptical of the European project," the report states.

Although Russia will also face difficulties from climate change, such as floods and more forest fires, it could benefit because it will have more land available for cultivation.

and resource extraction, as well as new shipping routes in the Arctic that were previously inaccessible, according to the White House report.

Over the past decade, intelligence agencies and top military officials have warned of the effects of climate change on global security, predicting that it

could lead to wars over water or other scarce resources.
