Following the publication of the illegal use of the spyware, Mandelblit sent a scathing letter to Kobi Shabtai.

Attorney General Dr. Avichai Mandelblit this evening (Thursday) informed Commissioner Kobi Shabtai that he would set up a commission of inquiry into allegations published in the media that the police had used NSO's spyware in violation of the law.

The ombudsman wrote: "In order to systematically and thoroughly examine the aspects related to listening through computer communication, I have decided, within the supervisory powers vested in me by law, and in accordance with your request, to establish a procedure to examine the published allegations. The adviser noted that the team will be headed by Deputy Attorney General Amit Merri.

"It is difficult to overstate the seriousness of the alleged violation of the fundamental rights concerned" the counsel opens his letter and explains that he asked for and also received the police's response to the issue.

"After examining all the material that the Investigations and Intelligence Division passed on to us at our request, and in light of what is presented in it, we found no basis for concern about the illegal use of the Israel Police by the means at its disposal, and we are satisfied that the Israel Police is acting according to law."

However, the counsel said that "it will be clarified that we are not informed of the existing supervision and control procedures in the police regarding the implementation of the actions using wiretapping tools for communication between computers."

But on the individual level, the counsel treats differently when he writes that "the more wrongful conduct is discovered, the more likely it is to amount to a criminal offense and the more he finds a basis for it, the more he will have to comply with the law."

In a statement issued earlier, Commissioner Saturn said: "The police under my leadership are attentive to any matter-of-fact criticism.

Indeed, from the date of publication, the police have begun a thorough internal investigation.

The examination did not yield any findings that indicate an alleged deviation from the provisions of the law.

I announce that if and to the extent that it turns out that there were specific cases in which there was an exception to managers - the police under my leadership will work for improvement and correction, in full transparency, and in cooperation with all relevant parties.

We will not accept any deviation from the provisions of the law, if it is found that there was one. "

This is a different and less decisive version than the one presented to the police yesterday in general and the commissioner in particular. Saturn said that "everything is done with approvals."
