The construction madness at Munich Central Station: Lots of barriers and diversions

No stopping signs, site fences and detours: whether on Schwanthalerstrasse, Paul-Heyse-Strasse or soon on Pappenheimstrasse - there is construction going on everywhere.

Anyone traveling by car or bicycle in the center of Munich needs strong nerves.

Construction sites, construction sites, construction sites as far as the eye can see.

Munich – Especially around the main station of the state capital Munich, road users are faced with challenges – road closures and detours are part of everyday life.

And now it's getting even worse...

No stopping signs, site fences and detours: whether on Schwanthalerstrasse, Paul-Heyse-Strasse or soon on Pappenheimstrasse - there is construction going on everywhere.

There are also debates in the district committee (BA) Ludwigsvorstadt/Isarvorstadt.

"Construction sites are a regular topic," says Benoît Blaser, Chairman of the BA.

There are also regular problems for pedestrians and cyclists.

Munich: Pedestrians have to avoid several barriers

Just like on Paul-Heyse-Strasse: As a pedestrian, you have to avoid various site fences and barriers here.

Because between Bayerstrasse and Schwanthalerstrasse there are construction sites on both sides of the street: demolition on one side, and the Elementum is being built on the other side - a quarter for offices, restaurants and retail.

A brand new project is being added this week on the other side of the train station: the municipal utilities are expanding their district cooling network.

They are laying pipes in Wredestrasse, Pappenheimstrasse and Karlstrasse.

The whole thing will probably last until June 2023. From Monday, Pappenheimstrasse will be one-way in the north-east direction for the first construction phase.

In addition, the crossing from Karlstrasse to Blutenburgstrasse is closed to cars.

Pedestrians and cyclists can pass through the construction site.

Construction work is also continuing on Schwanthalerstrasse: the new trade union building at number 64 will be completed by mid-2024.

The people of Munich have been involved in a few projects for some time: such as the renovation of the main train station.

It gets a new entrance building and new station forecourts, and the second S-Bahn trunk line is also being built at the same time.

There has been a lot of fuss about them lately – the duration and costs are significantly higher than originally estimated.

And it takes longer!

Detours or closures due to roadworks annoy all road users.

However, they are part of urban development, says Blaser.

"Improvements such as the new cycle path on Schwanthalerstrasse between Paul-Heyse-Strasse and Martin-Greif-Strasse or the Paul-Heyse underpass also require temporary restrictions." However, better coordination of the construction sites is desirable, says the local politician.

But that is not easy or possible with the many private construction projects.
