The European Union confirms its support for Cyprus and Greece against Ankara's actions

The European Union expressed its concern about the developments in the situation in the Mediterranean after the Turkish regime announced the continuation of illegal exploration operations in it, affirming its support for Cyprus and Greece and its willingness "to take measures in response to Ankara's actions in the Mediterranean."

"We agree that the situation in the Mediterranean is extremely worrying and must be resolved through negotiation and not through steps that increase tensions," Sputnik quoted the commission's spokesperson for foreign affairs, Peter Stano, as saying in a press briefing today. Engage in negotiations with Turkey and also to prepare for options to enact measures in response to Turkey's actions in the Mediterranean.

In turn, the office of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that his country wants to hold an urgent meeting of the European Union on Turkey after Ankara sent a ship to explore for oil in a disputed area in the eastern Mediterranean.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will submit a request to the Council of Foreign Affairs of the European Union to hold an emergency summit," the Greek prime minister's office said, according to Agence France-Presse.

For its part, the Greek newspaper “Ekathimirini” stated that “Greek naval frigates and warplanes are ready to take off at any time,” stressing that “the Greek army has prepared warships and aircraft to respond to any emergency from Turkey in the Mediterranean.”

In a statement yesterday, the Greek Foreign Ministry called on the Turkish regime to stop illegal actions in the eastern Mediterranean, noting that these provocative activities undermine peace and security in the region, stressing that Greece will not accept blackmail and will defend its sovereign rights.

The head of the Turkish regime, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, recently announced the resumption of fuel exploration in the disputed region of the Eastern Mediterranean, while his Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşolu announced that his regime would issue licenses for exploration and drilling in new areas by the end of this August.
