The captains say goodbye to the coach on the day Chus Mateo is presented without reference to the previous stage

The heavyweights of Real Madrid have paid their tribute this Wednesday to Pablo Laso.

The Vitorian was dismissed as coach of the basketball team last Monday for "medical reasons", putting an end to one of the most successful stages of the club: 11 seasons in which they added 22 titles for their showcases.

But there is no turning back.

Relations between the club and the coach have deteriorated to the point that Laso publicly argued with Madrid that he be removed for medical reasons when he had the approval of the doctors who had treated him.

Although the goodbye was not the desired one, Laso's mark on Real Madrid will be indelible due to his performance and his character.

Several of the players who lived these years with the coach wanted to say goodbye and pay tribute to him.

One of the first has been Luka Doncic, star of the Dallas Mavericks, who began his career at the age of 16 with Laso.

“Thank you for everything, Pablo”, the Slovenian tweeted, accompanying the text of a photo in which the player hugs Laso.

Also Lorenzo Sanz, former director of the basketball team, who shared a dressing room with Laso during his time as Real Madrid players.

“There are not enough words that can thank the immense work that Pablo Laso has done in our team.

Teammate on the pitch, legend on the bench and, above all, friend”.

There have not been many players from the current squad that this Wednesday have said goodbye to the coach on social networks.

Those who did want to pay public tribute to Laso were the two team captains, Sergio Llull and Rudy Fernández.

“Thank you for making me make the best decision of my life.

It has been an honor to play alongside you and have achieved so much success together.

Thanks, Pablo”, Rudy tweeted, while Llull also pointed to him as the key to the team's success.

“I played for Pablo Laso's Madrid, and it was incredible.

Thank you for helping to return this great team to where he deserved to be,” the captain posted.

While the farewells took place on social networks, Real Madrid turned the page.

The club announced this Wednesday the renewal of Llull until 2024, and has presented its new head coach, Chus Mateo.

The new coach has reviewed his career until reaching the first team, highlighting the responsibility that directing Real Madrid entails, but has made no mention of his predecessor.

“I like fast and collaborative basketball, a team in which they help each other.

A team that defends and in which everyone has the ability to make decisions.

We will see it depending on the template that is made”, explained the coach.

So far, the Real Madrid squad has only added casualties and has not announced any hiring for next season.

Jeff Taylor, Trey Thompkins and Thomas Heurtel, in addition to Laso, have already left the club.

Causeur and Llull have been renewed, but Madrid have not yet closed any of the signings they aspire to this summer, such as Sergio 'Chacho' Rodríguez, Mario Hezonja or Dzanan Musa.
