Only 15% of French people say they are ready to pay for reliable information, making the country one of the least willing to put their hands in their pockets for information, according to an Ipsos study conducted in 29 countries published on Tuesday.

According to this “Ipsos global advisor” study carried out online from May 22 to June 5 among 18,998 people (1,000 in France), only 7% of French people pay for information while the world average is 17%.

And 15% of people questioned in France would be ready to pay for reliable information, against 27% in the rest of the world.

“The French are the ones who say they are the least inclined to pay for information from the Russians and the Japanese.

Conversely, Indians, Turks and Chinese are the most numerous to declare themselves ready to pay for information ”, details to AFP Yves Bardon, director of the Flair program at Ipsos.

“This raises the question of the value of information in a world where everything is free and where information forms a continuous and contradictory flow.

Are people ready to pay for information on Monday that will be denied on Wednesday? ”Asks the specialist, speaking of the coronavirus.

The study also crosses opinion data and consumption habits.

"The most sensitive to populist theories are those who consume the most free information with the risk of being more exposed to fake news", underlines Yves Bardon.

Just under half of those surveyed (40%) seek to ensure that information is coming from trustworthy sources.

Only 8% of French people read the printed press daily

And just over one in two (52%) believe they can spot fake news (58% globally).

For information, in all countries, television (74%) and social networks (72%) are preferred over news sites (62%) and dedicated mobile applications (61%).

In France, television also comes out on top, but social networks are used by less than one in two people (48%) as a daily means of information.

Online, they are among the quickest to use an ad blocker (42%), as are the Chinese (50%).

The French are also among those who read the printed press the least every day: 28% of them admit to never opening a daily, and only 8% are faithful to it every day (against 14% worldwide).
