The closure had been decided by the Paris council in 2021 as a sign of the fight for animal welfare. The Paris bird market, which is held on Sundays on the Ile de la Cité, will be permanently closed at the end of December for the sake of "

animal welfare

", in accordance with a decision in principle taken in 2021, indicated the town hall of Paris Monday.

"

Last place of sale of this type on the public domain

" of the capital, this bird market, which settles every Sunday in the halls of the Elizabeth-II flower market (IVth arrondissement), concerns another ten traders, specifies the town hall in a press release.

She “

made a support proposal to them, a majority of them having started to diversify their activity

” since the decision in principle, taken in February 2021, to end this trade.

The Council of Paris then voted to ban the sale of birds and other live animals on this flower market dating back to the 19th century, and which must be renovated between 2023 and 2025.

Deputy Mayor Christophe Najdovski, in charge of animal welfare, then justified this decision by the existence of bird trafficking, of which the market was "

the epicenter

", and the conditions of presentation of the birds "

unacceptable with regard to the animal welfare conditions required today

”.

A charter in favor of animal welfare

The issue of animal protection and well-being has been a topic of public debate for several years, notably through videos, sometimes crude, broadcast by animal rights associations.

It is one of them, PAZ (Paris Animals Zoopolis), which had launched a petition to demand the closure of the bird market, collecting around 3,000 signatures, according to its co-founder Amandine Sanvisens.

Welcoming a "

historic advance

" but "

long to come

", Amadine Sanvisens weighs up other subjects of animal condition on which the City "

is not advancing

".

The town hall recalls having adopted in July 2021 a charter in favor of animal well-being in which it undertakes "

to stop all sale of live animals on the public domain

".

However, "

there are two salons for the sale of pets

" in places, the Parc Floral and the Parc des expositions at the Porte de Versailles, which "

belong to the City

", underlines Amandine Sanvisens.

"

We took stock of the charter, it is very bad

," said the activist who is asking, in particular, because of breaches of this text, the termination of pony ride agreements in Parisian parks.
