Mehmet Aslan recorded with his camera a small and moving moment of an amputated Syrian refugee swinging his son who was born with a deformity following a nerve gas injury. "The photography is sad, but it has a message of hope," he told Walla! The photographer spoke about the difficulties of the refugees' lives and the hope that the publication of the photo would help little Mustafa to gain a prosthetic leg.

Turkish photographer Mehmet Aslan documented on his camera a Syrian refugee who lost his leg in a bombing in the country's civil war.

The photo shows the refugee lifting his son, who was born without limbs, in the air.

The documentation won an award as part of the global photography competition "Siena" and won this year's photography award.

"While filming, I thought about the difficult moments in this life," Aslan said in a conversation with Walla !.

"Although photography has a sad side, it was for me a source of happiness for the hour after the award the image will be distributed around the world."

Aslan recounted the moment the winning photo was taken and said that "I live here in the area and we have refugees from the war in Syria, I left the house to take pictures and came across Monzir the Elder playing with his son Mustafa."

Aslan added that "they told me their story after the picture: while Monzir Sr. was shopping in a market in Syria, there was a shelling and he lost his right leg because of a bomb that fell next to him. His wife, who was pregnant at the time, inhaled the nerve gas used by Assad's army. Mustafa The son was born without limbs, probably due to the influence of the sarin gas that his mother inhaled. "

The winning photographer told Walla!

"The war is a situation that is adversely affecting every person and family, and it is the same in every country around the world. One of the goals of this picture is to achieve the new prosthesis that the little Mustafa child needs to continue his life on his own."
