If you want a high-yielding currant harvest in June and July, you need to prune the shrub regularly - and properly.
There are three mistakes you should avoid.
Currants are very popular in the garden: Either they are eaten or they are processed - into jam, for example.
But this requires a magnificent harvest, which can only be achieved through good care of the bushes.
The right cut is particularly important here - and
three mistakes
that should be avoided.
Cutting currants: Mistake 1 - Young shoots cut back too much
It is important for the future harvest that you
encourage
the
young shoots
- the old ones grow smaller and smaller currants over the years.
That is why the young fruit wood, from which you expect a large harvest, must not be cut back too much or even completely.
Otherwise, the rich harvest may not be available in the next year.
With red and white currants, you should always leave three young ground shoots standing - in return, three older scaffold shoots are cut off at the roots.
You can recognize the young shoots by their
light brown bark
, while the older ones have already taken on a dark brown color.
Cutting currants: mistake 2 - neglected thinning
Anyone who forgets to regularly remove the older shoots is already making the second mistake: if a currant bush is not thinned out enough, it quickly turns into a
densely branched undergrowth
on which hardly any fruit grows outside.
In addition, the shrub lacks adequate exposure.
For this reason, too, it is important to remove around three older shoots each year and in return leave three of the younger shoots - the rest can also be cut.

Cutting currants: mistake 3 - forgetting to cut the plant
When the currant bush is freshly planted, it usually does not occur to anyone to prune the plant straight away.
This is exactly what the
garden journal
advises
.
This redirects the sap pressure to the lower-lying buds, so that a lively budding begins here.
This is not only good for the roots, but also makes for excellent fruit wood.
That is why the currant bush should be
cut back by a third
after planting
.
