Cutting currants: Mistake 1 - Young shoots cut back too much

It is important for the future harvest that you

encourage

young shoots

- the old ones grow smaller and smaller currants over the years.

That is why the young fruit wood, from which you expect a large harvest, must not be cut back too much or even completely.

Otherwise, the rich harvest may not be available in the next year.

With red and white currants, you should always leave three young ground shoots standing - in return, three older scaffold shoots are cut off at the roots.

You can recognize the young shoots by their

light brown bark

, while the older ones have already taken on a dark brown color.

Cutting currants: mistake 2 - neglected thinning

Anyone who forgets to regularly remove the older shoots is already making the second mistake: if a currant bush is not thinned out enough, it quickly turns into a

densely branched undergrowth

on which hardly any fruit grows outside.

In addition, the shrub lacks adequate exposure.
