Experts in social psychology are well aware of the "aura effect," which occurs when a person's traits — good or bad — are transferred to his or her immediate and distant environment.

Just as it is said that laughter and joy are contagious - so are resentment, frustration and feelings of inferiority.

But what if we could use this aura effect to improve our habits and those of those around us?

This is exactly the question that occupied a group of researchers who followed for two years obese people who wanted to make a positive change in their lives.

The conclusions of the study, published in the International Journal of Obesity, show how one of the most popular diets in the world today has had a positive effect not only on those subjects - but on their immediate family.

To examine the issue, the researchers selected 148 obese people and also followed their family members.

Subjects were asked to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which is now considered by many to be the healthiest in the world.

This is a menu that includes lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains, chicken, fish, olive oil, cheeses, yogurt and red wine in moderation.

Those who stick to this menu should also reduce their consumption of white bread, processed foods, saturated fat and red meat.

During the study period, participants shed an average of 5.1 pounds of body weight in the first year and 6.79 pounds in the second year.

Their biological indices have also improved significantly in these two years, as has their physical fitness.

But the really amazing part of this story is the impact the experiment had on family members - people who did not take an active part in the study and were not asked to make any change in their diet.

"Luckily, this time it's a positive infection"

The family members of the study participants included parents, children, spouses, siblings and even very close friends.

The data at the end of the period revealed an amazing figure - these people from the immediate circle lost an average of 1.25 kilograms of body weight in the first year and no less than 4 kilograms on average in the second year.

Let us emphasize again - these are people who were not required to change anything in their habits.

As mentioned, this is an average figure, and the researchers emphasized that the change was much greater among family members of study participants who cooked their own meals at home.

Dr. Albert Gooday, director of the Department of Endocrinology and Nutrition at the Del Mar Hospital in Barcelona and who led the study, noted that "the effect of this change was contagious, and fortunately, this time it is a positive 'contagion', leading to weight loss and improved eating habits (...) Of all the known methods of weight loss, a method based on a Mediterranean menu makes it easier to share with the whole family. "

Mediterranean nutrition has been linked in a long line of studies in recent years to improving health in a variety of ways. Lowers cholesterol, prevents neurological diseases, improves attention and concentration abilities, strengthens the digestive system, etc. And its really big advantage is that unlike diets that are very difficult to stick to, you have probably already seen that this diet includes many foods that you already eat every day and even really like.

However, there is also a researcher who took part in preparing this review and actually took care to cool the enthusiasm.

Her name is Dr. Olga Kastenier and she is researching heart disease and nutrition at Del Mar Hospital. .
