Thousands of doctors and medical students demonstrated on Friday across Italy demanding educational reform in their sector, including an increase in the number of scholarships for specializations.

A hundred of these young general practitioners or students gathered in Milan (North) threw their white coats on the ground. Some brandished placards which said: "Without doctors there are only miracles" or "Who will care for you?" tomorrow.

An identical scene took place in Rome, in front of the parliament: "We are doctors, not mouths holes", "without specialists, the health system collapses" or even "without specialists the ministers will treat you", proclaimed the banners brandished by a hundred demonstrators.

This protest movement was organized in 21 Italian cities, including Naples, Bologna, Genoa, Turin, Florence or Palermo.

Young doctors and students in their final year, all of whom made a great contribution during the Covid-19 pandemic, demanded a better appreciation of their work and a career with more secure outlets.

“Let's start from a given: by 2025, more than 60% of our specialist colleagues and general practitioners will retire. Given the current health policy, there will not be enough staff to replace them. The right to care and health of all citizens will therefore be endangered, "said a statement from the organizers.

“We no longer accept to be called heroes because caring is a daily life choice for us. We don't want applause, we just want our rights to be recognized, ”added the press release.
