Tokyo Olympics: team judo, how does it work?

2021-07-30T16:46:12.741Z

This Saturday, the French judo team will try to get a medal in the team event, which makes its appearance at the Games in

Bring together Teddy Riner, Clarisse Agbégnénou and Romane Dicko in the same team.

No, it is not the Avengers but the potential composition of the French judo team for the mixed team event.

A competition that makes its appearance for the first time at the Olympic Games this summer.

Often misunderstood, this test deserves some clarification.

Especially since the French have a very good chance of a medal in Tokyo this Saturday (entry into contention at 4 am French time).

Only three categories per gender

To determine the composition of the France team, team director Larbi Benboudaoud will be able to choose, among those selected for the Tokyo Olympics, three judokas per gender according to very specific categories, and different from the 7 categories that exist individually.

For women, it will be necessary to line up a French for the -57 kg, one for the -70 kg, and one for the +70 kg.

The same goes for their male counterparts with a three-color judoka in -73 kg, -90 kg, and +90 kg.

Logical detail but important to specify, the selected judokas obviously face opponents of the same sex, and only from their respective categories.

What composition for France?

In women, we could therefore see the bronze medalist Romane Dicko (+ 70), associated with the Olympic champion Clarisse Agbégnénou (-70) and the vice-champion of Tokyo Sarah-Léonie Cysique (-57).

Agbégnénou (titled in -63 kg) would, in this case, potentially face opponents usually in the higher category individually.

On the men's side, Teddy Riner should find the tatami mats to represent France in +90 kg.

Axel Clerget will necessarily be present since he is the only tricolor in -90 kg.

Finally, nothing is certain concerning the third participant in -73 kg.

The bronze medalist Luka Mkheidze could ride his momentum, but would suffer from too much weight deficit (he belongs to the -60 kg category).

Guillaume Chaine (-73 kg), eliminated early in the Round of 16 in Tokyo, could take advantage.

The course of the competition

Six judokas, three women and three men, six individual fights, so six points to go for.

In case of victory, each fight brings back one point.

To be sure of winning, it suffices to win 4 points.

In the event of a tie (3 to 3) at the end of the match, the International Judo Federation (IJF) has established these regulations: “A draw will be made in all weight categories.

The athletes selected in the draw will compete again in a golden score fight.

"

To get a medal, the Blues will face 11 other nations.

Thanks to its seeded status, the French team will start in the quarter-finals.

Its biggest opponent remains Japan.

With the shock team, and the seven medals brought back by the French judokas at the Games, the goal is clear: Olympic gold.
