Tokyo Olympics: the Riner earthquake, Romane Dicko in half, the zero point of BMX ... what you missed last night

2021-07-30T05:06:24.751Z

We had a better night. The French camp went from disillusionment to disillusion this Friday morning, starting with the defeat in

Nightmarish morning for the French.

Teddy Riner saw his dream of an Olympic treble fly off this Friday a little before 6 a.m. in France while the four BMX finalists missed the podium and the swordsmen lost as soon as they entered the running.

The only clarification on the board: the qualification of the judokate Romane Dicko for the semi-finals.

Here's everything you missed out on that night in Tokyo, also marked by the debut of track and field events.

Riner will not make the pass of three

So yes, a bronze medal is still possible today.

But no, this is not the metal that Teddy Riner dreamed of.

The 2012 and 2016 Olympic champion fell in the quarterfinals this morning at Nippon Budokan against Russian Tamerlan Bashaev.

A defeat conceded at the end of the "golden score" and against the course of the match due to a fatal loss of balance.

The French will have to re-mobilize and win his two repechage fights to save his day.

đŸ„‹â˜č❌ It's over for Teddy Riner!

The swordsmen stunned

The first tricolor rout had occurred an hour earlier.

The French men's épée team, Olympic champion in Rio 2016 and led by the new king Romain Cannone, was eliminated 45 to 44 in the quarterfinals of the tournament by Japan.

Triple reigning champions (the team event was not on the program in London in 2012), the French still led 38-36 before the last duel but Yannick Borel suffered a fatal 9-6.

Borel, favorite for individual gold, had already been eliminated from the start on Sunday.

"We will get back to work with a lot of humility," said Borel, thinking of the Paris-2024 Olympics, adding that he was taking "his share of responsibility" in this defeat.

Four finalists but zero medals

We ended this hour of fiasco with BMX racing.

All hopes were allowed with four qualified in the final, three men (Romain Mahieu, Sylvain André and Joris Daudet) and one woman (Axelle Etienne).

Result of the races: zero medals and a big disappointment for Joris Daudet, in the fight for bronze but on the ground after the last turn.

Sylvain André was ranked 4th and Romain Mahieu 6th.

Having started well in her final at eight, Axelle Etienne negotiated the first corner badly and quickly lost all hope of getting on the podium.

She finished 7th.

đŸš”đŸ‡«đŸ‡· Like her male compatriots, Axelle Etienne will not be on the podium in BMX.

The Frenchwoman missed her final by placing penultimate in a race won by Briton Bethany Shriever đŸ„‡

Hope Dicko

The important thing is to still believe in it.

And for that, we have Romane Dicko.

The 21-year-old judokate, engaged in the + 78 kg category and double European champion, has the heavy task of restoring the image of French judo.

Qualified brilliantly for the last four, she will play her place in the final against Cuban Idalys Ortiz, Olympic champion in 2012 and silver in 2016. Fight scheduled around 10:15 am.

Let's go for athletics

Many French people were in contention for this first day of athletics.

RĂ©nelle Lamote thus qualified without incident for the semi-finals of the 800 m.

The double vice-champion of Europe in the distance won her series in 2â€Č01 ″ 92.

In the 400m hurdles, Ludvy Vaillant and Wilfried Happio both finished 5th in their series but were drafted on time for the semi-finals on Sunday.

Frenchman Alexis Phelut also qualified for the 3000m steeplechase final scheduled for Monday on Friday.

Surprise elimination on the other hand of Djilali Bedrani, fifth at the World Championships in 2019, but unable to repeat his performances in Tokyo.

“I ran with fatigue in my legs, I didn't get used to the air of Japan.

I didn't get used to the jet lag.

I slept 2/3 hours a night for 10 days, haven't done a single night since I arrived.

It's entirely my fault, I should have managed that, ”he responded.

Discobolist Lolassonn Djouhan was also released in qualifying.

And also (other eliminations) ...

- Mehdy Metella will not go to the 100m butterfly final.

He clocked the 9th qualifying semifinals (51.32), failing just 2 / 100th of 8th and last qualifying place for the final.

World bronze medalist in 2017 over 100 m, the 29-year-old swimmer is struggling to regain his level since a shoulder operation in January 2020, which required a long rehabilitation and continues to make him suffer.

- The French Mathilde Lamolle and CĂ©line Goberville were eliminated after qualifying for the 25m pistol event (sport shooting).

They finished 12th and 31st respectively.

- Lisa Barbelin, France's last hope for a medal in archery, also lost in the round of 16 of the individual event.

The 21-year-old archer, crowned European champion in 2021 and world number two, was beaten by Mexican Alejandra Valencia 6-0 ...

- Note also that the Ivorian Marie-José Ta Lou impressed in the 100-meter heats by setting the best time and equaling the African record (10'78).

Jamaican favorites Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce also qualify for the semi on Saturday.
