The circumstances of the tragedy which took place this Thursday at the end of the afternoon on the platforms of the RER A in Châtelet remain for the moment undetermined.

But it had concrete and immediate consequences for thousands of public transport users in the capital.

Shortly after 4 p.m., a passenger who had found himself on the RER A tracks was struck by a train returning to the station.

According to our information, he would not have survived his injuries.

The tragedy required the immediate evacuation of the station but also the interruption of traffic on line A, on the entire central section, from Nation to Auber.

The stopping of the trains on the busiest section of the line (it accommodates up to 50,000 passengers per hour in each direction), just before the start of the evening rush hour, caused major disruptions on the rest of the route. line A. These disruptions were quickly reflected on the other RER lines (B and D) and the many metros serving Châtelet ... all stormed by users of line A.

Crowds, jostling, pedestrian traffic jams in the escalators and the maze of corridors of Châtelet and security guards a little overwhelmed by the crowd ... The chaotic situation continued until the early evening.

Traffic on line A was gradually re-established shortly after 7 p.m.

A police investigation was opened to clarify the circumstances of the fatal accident.

According to some travelers, indirect witnesses of the tragedy, it could be a question of suicide.
