Numerous German holidaymakers could already romp around in Turkey in the summer.

The governments are working on rules to make this possible.

"We want as much vacation to be possible in summer as is justifiable," said Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas after a conversation with his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Cavusoglu in Berlin.

Currently, the number of corona infections in Turkey is still very high with an incidence of 276.1 (as of May 4).

The Robert Koch Institute classifies the country as a high incidence area *.

Nevertheless, there is great hope for a

Both countries want to build on what was successfully implemented last year, said Heiko Maas, according to a report by the German Press Agency.

Despite the high number of infections, Cavusoglu is beating the drum for a vacation in Turkey.

All measures have been taken "so that our friends can spend their vacation safely".

Hotels are tied into a certification program for safe tourism.

In contrast to last year, this program has also been expanded to include smaller institutions, which are regularly checked.

Turkey in the corona pandemic: cheating on infection numbers

Traveling to Turkey in the last year was associated with a lot of back and forth.

In the summer of 2020, at the urging of the Turkish government, the federal government lifted the travel warning for popular holiday regions such as Antalya, Izmir, Aydin and Muğla.

A special hygiene concept for tourism was a prerequisite.

In November, however, all regions were re-classified as risk areas after it emerged that the Turkish government was not transparent enough with the corona infection numbers.

Turkey has been a high incidence area since April 2020, after the 7-day incidence rose well over 200 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
