The EM in triathlon will take place from August 12th to 14th as part of the European Championships 2022 in Munich.

Venue is the Olympic Park.

Munich – Triathlon with the three consecutive disciplines of swimming, cycling and running is considered one of the most challenging sports of all.

At the European Championships 2022 in Munich, the best triathletes will compete over three days in the Olympic Park, creating a lot of excitement.

Triathlon at the European Championships: General

A type of triathlon was already being held in France in the 1920s under the name Les Trois Sports, but it remained a marginal phenomenon for a long time.

It wasn't until 1974 that the first modern triathlon took place in San Diego, California, in which participants first ran six American miles, then cycled five miles and finally swam 500 yards (about 500 meters).

Four years later, the legendary Ironman Hawaii took place for the first time.

In 1989, the so-called Olympic distance was formally established, according to which the triathlon consists of 1.5 kilometers of swimming, 40 kilometers of cycling and 10 kilometers of running.

These distances also apply to the European Championships in Munich in August.

A total of three competitions are on the program: the individual competitions for women and men and a mixed relay, in which two women and two men compete in teams.

Each team member completes a 300-meter swim, followed by a 6-kilometer bike ride and a 1.5-kilometer run.

In addition to the official triathlon, the European Championships also include the European Championships over the sprint distance (750 meters / 20 kilometers / 5 kilometers) for all age groups.

Triathlon: teams and stars at the European Championships

The European Triathlon Union is the umbrella organization for European triathlon, representing a total of ten national member associations.

Last but not least, the most successful teams in recent years include the German and British teams, which secured gold in the mixed relay at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo last year.

France took third place behind the USA and is one of the favorites again this time.

Germany can look forward to its biggest stars Laura Lindemann, Annika Koch, Jonas Schomburg and Justus Nieschlag in the individual competitions.

The men's group of favorites also includes Norwegian Olympic champion and reigning world champion Kristian Blummenfelt, second-placed Briton Alex Yee and fourth-placed Belgian Marten van Riel, as well as defending champion Dorian Coninx from France.

The women's event includes defending champion Julie Derron from Switzerland and Olympic silver medalist Georgia Taylor-Brown.

Triathlon: Dates at the European Championships

The triathlon competitions are held on three consecutive days at the European Championships:

  • Friday, August 12: 5:15 p.m. – 7:24 p.m. Elite Women

  • Saturday, August 13, 4:00 p.m. – 5:58 p.m.: Elite Men

  • Sunday, August 14, 18:00 – 19:30: Elite Mixed Relay

At the same time, the European Championships over the sprint distance in triathlon will take place during the day on August 14, where around 1,000 amateurs from all over Europe will compete in their respective age groups.

Your competition begins in Karlsfelder See and ends in the Olympic Park in Munich.

Triathlon: Olympic Park venue

All three professional triathlon competitions are held in the Olympiapark next to the Olympic Stadium in Munich, which is the venue for most of the European Championships competitions.

To start with, there will be swimming in the Olympic Lake, before the triathletes cycle and run on circuits in and around the Olympic Park.

No ticket purchase is required for triathlon competitions.

Spectators can follow the runs and bike races anywhere in the Olympic Park.

In order to observe swimming in the Olympic lake, it is advisable to secure good seats on the Olympic hill in good time.

This offers the best panoramic view of the lake and the park area.

A bus stop is nearby (line 144).

Alternatively, you can take the tram (Olympiapark-West) or the subway (Olympiazentrum).
