Triplets from the Upper Palatinate generated international interest in medical circles.

They were the first children born with Corona.

Raft - It is December 15, 2020. The corona pandemic is raging, the government is imposing the second lockdown.

To date, there is no general vaccination option.

It was only a few weeks later that the first people in Germany received the Biontech vaccine against Covid-19.

In the case of Alexandra Sommer, a pregnant woman from the Floss market (district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab), the vaccination could have possibly prevented worse things from happening.

Because: You and the child's father contracted Corona a few days before the birth on December 15th.

Corona triplets from the Upper Palatinate: At birth they only weigh 1000 grams

As reported by Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), the triplets were born in the 28th week of pregnancy.

Each child only weighed about 1000 grams.

This circumstance alone weakened the babies.

But just a few hours later, the doctors are sure: Lilian, Felicia and Noel have Corona.

They were the first children worldwide to be born with a corona infection.

Her mother was already in the Weiden Clinic because of her own Covid 19 disease and pregnancy.

There, the doctors gave her a drug that would help the triplets' lungs to mature.

Looking back, that was the right decision.

Because just a few days later, the three saw the light of day.

Triplets are born in the Upper Palatinate with Corona: Parents fear for their children

But this is the beginning of a time of fear and anxiety for her parents.

Since the mother still had Corona and her partner as well, they were not able to see the babies for two weeks.

Alexandra Sommer told BR that it was a terrible time for her.

Her thoughts only wandered about her children and she cried a lot.

"I always thought if a child dies now, I haven't seen them alive."

The attending physician, Fritz Schneble, chief physician at the clinic for children and youth medicine in Weiden, can remember that the lung function of the triplets caused considerable problems for a few days.

That's why the medical team finally had to connect the three to ventilators - according to Schneble, the children were sicker than expected.

Corona triplets from the Upper Palatinate: The virus is transmitted to the placenta in the womb

But how did it come about that the babies were born with Corona?

The virus was already transmitted to the children in the womb via the placenta.

Today this is a circumstance that, according to Fritz Schneble, no longer occurs so often.

He advises all pregnant women to be vaccinated against Corona.

"If a pregnant woman falls ill with Covid, the risk of a stillbirth is twice as high as without an infection," he told BR.

The case of Alexandra Sommer and her triplets is so spectacular that the doctors at the Weiden Clinic and a few other specialists examined it.

They then published the results in specialist publications.

Like in the magazine "Frontiers in Pediatrics".

Today the Corona triplets from the Upper Palatinate are doing well again

Now, about a year and a half later, Noel, Felicia and Lilian are doing well.

They have no effect from the corona infection.

And in the fall, the siblings are supposed to start crèche.
