On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, two festive events were held today at the Institute of Special Education for the Rehabilitation of the Blind in Damascus and Sumaya Makhzoumieh School in Mezzeh, with the aim of supporting people with disabilities and raising awareness of the importance of their role and achieving equal opportunities with their peers in the educational process.

The event, which was held at the Institute of Education in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, the United Nations Population Fund in Syria and the Nour Association for Relief and Development, included poetic paragraphs, individual and group songs, and instrumental music on the organ, in which a number of blind students participated in the institute, and an exhibition of handicrafts.

The educational event at the inclusive Sumaya Makhzoumi School also included an art exhibition of the works of students with disabilities, a play on the concepts of bullying and the importance of integrating into society, in addition to musical performances.

Minister of Education, Dr. Darem Tabbaa, stressed in his speech the need to increase attention and care for persons with disabilities, follow up their education and enable them to integrate into society, pointing out that the expansion of inclusive schools is a positive step in terms of caring for this segment and integrating it with its peers and ensuring a good level of learning to develop and develop its skills.

In turn, the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Muhammad Seif El-Din, pointed out in his speech the importance of such an event in supporting the students of the Special Education Institute for the Rehabilitation of the Blind, indicating that the Ministry is working to develop its affiliated institutes and provide all the necessary training and education and provide the necessary environment to integrate persons with disabilities into society and empower them. and help them.

The Governor of Damascus, Engineer Adel Al-Olabi, pointed out that the events reflect the distinguished talents and capabilities of persons with disabilities and highlight the potential and skills inherent within each of them and their determination to defy difficulties and prove their presence and will to live.

The two students at the Institute of Education for the Rehabilitation of the Blind, Ghassan Samara and Abdul Rahman Shoushara, expressed their thanks for organizing this event, which contributed to demonstrating their skills and experiences, and their colleagues, indicating that the study at the Institute is carried out according to the curricula of the Ministry of Education followed in regular schools by the method of embossed letters or audio recording.

The institute, which includes 160 male and female students, provides educational services from the first to the third secondary grades in the basic educational curricula, according to a statement by the director of the institute, Nada Abu Al-Shamat to SANA, indicating that there are special tools for training and a special professional section for teaching handicrafts to qualify students and help them enter the labor market after studying. .

The Assistant Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Omar Ballan, explained that the Fund follows the strategy of integrating persons with disabilities into society and works at several levels, represented by planning and programs, supporting, rehabilitating and financing centers that care for them in terms of infrastructure, enabling them to easily access information, and training cadres working in this field.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated on the 3rd of December after it was first approved by the United Nations in 1992 with the aim of supporting this category, integrating it into society and raising awareness of its issues.

The two events were attended by the Secretary of the Damascus and Rural Damascus Branches of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party and a member of the Executive Office of the Health and Social Affairs Sector in the Damascus Governorate.
