Estonia and Latvia have already restricted the issuing of visas to Russian citizens. Poland now wants to follow this example – and is also calling for further sanctions.

Following the example of Estonia and Latvia, Poland is now also considering tightening the rules for issuing visas to Russian citizens.

"Poland is working on developing a concept that will make it possible not to issue visas for Russians," Deputy Foreign Minister Piotr Wawrzyk told the PAP news agency on Sunday.

The decision will be made in the coming weeks.

Wawrzyk said his country was in favor of the EU imposing further sanctions against Russia because of the Ukraine war.

This also includes the suspension of the treaty on visa facilitation for Russian citizens.

“But the large member states, including Germany, France and the Netherlands, oppose this.”

Poland is currently speaking to other member states and has found that, in addition to the three Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic also share his view, said the Deputy Foreign Minister.

Germany and the EU Commission in Brussels reject a fundamental freeze on tourist visas for Russians.

Estonia had decided last week that from August 18, Russian citizens would no longer be allowed to enter the country with a Schengen visa issued by Estonia.

Excluded from the regulation are Russians whose home country is Estonia or who have their permanent residence there.

There are also other exceptions, such as visiting relatives.

Russian citizens with visas issued by other EU members are also allowed to enter the country.

Latvia has further restricted issuing visas to Russians indefinitely.

The Latvian embassy in Moscow only accepts visa applications from Russian citizens who wish to attend the funeral of a close relative in Latvia.
