The mega corporation Unilever is gambling for the consumer goods division of its competitor GlaxoSmithKline. The purchase price sounds high – but it may not be enough.

The Anglo-Dutch consumer goods group Unilever confirmed its interest in the consumer goods division of pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline on Saturday.

The Sunday Times had previously reported that Unilever, known for Langnese ice cream, Knorr sauces and Signal toothpaste, had offered around 50 billion pounds (60 billion euros).

However, GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer, which holds a minority stake in the division, rejected this as too low.

"GSK Consumer Healthcare is a leader in the attractive area of consumer healthcare and would be a good strategic fit with Unilever as it continues to transform its portfolio," Unilever said.

However, a possible agreement is open.
