The US bishops are moving towards the "excommunication" of Joe Biden and the politicians who, like the president of the United States, are in favor of the right to abortion.

Defying the Vatican warning that it had called for avoiding the issue, the US Bishops' Conference has given the green light to the future drafting of a controversial document on "Eucharistic coherence" that could lead to a ban on communion for the head of the White House.

"It's a private matter and I don't think it will happen", Biden reacted to the decision that saw two thirds of the prelates (155) siding in favor of the document, against 55, while 6 abstained. By putting forward a proposal supported by the more conservative wing of the episcopate, the vote highlighted a deep rift in the American Church. Biden is the second Catholic president after JFK - one of the most devoted Commander in Chief along with Jimmy Carter - and the Eucharist has been a source of strength in the most difficult moments of his life.
