Brazil has registered the second most corona infections worldwide. The hardest hit USA are reacting to the increase and restricting the entry from Brazil.

Washington (dpa) - In view of the rapidly increasing number of corona infections in Brazil, the US government has imposed extensive entry restrictions for people from the South American country.

Brazilians and foreigners who stayed in the country in the two weeks before a planned entry are no longer allowed to come to the USA, as the White House explained. The regulation applies from Friday and is not limited in time. This does not include US citizens, their family members, permanent residents and diplomats.

"The measure will help ensure that foreigners who have been to Brazil do not become a source of new infections in our country," said President Donald Trump spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany. Trade is not affected by the new restrictions, it said. Due to the spread of the corona virus, Trump had already imposed an entry ban for foreigners from China, the European Schengen area, Great Britain and Ireland. Travel across the American border to Canada in the north and Mexico in the south are also temporarily restricted due to the pandemic.

In Brazil, data from Johns Hopkins University showed around 350,000 confirmed coronavirus infections and 22,000 deaths. The country with the largest population in Latin America has now registered the second most infections worldwide in absolute numbers - there is only more in the United States with a good 1.6 million known infections and almost 100,000 deaths.
