US health authorities revised down the number of cases of electronic tobacco-related lung disease

[Chicago 12th Reuters]-The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reduced the number of cases of electronic tobacco-related lung disease under investigation to 380 on the 12th. The reason is that each state began evaluating patients based on the narrower case definition announced by CDC at the end of last month.

The corrected number of cases includes only “confirmed” cases and “probable” cases. Before the correction, CDC reported that it was investigating more than 450 “possible” cases of pulmonary disease of unknown cause.

The number of deaths from e-cigarette-related diseases has remained unchanged at six. Deaths have been reported in California, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, and Oregon.

As of the 11th, three new cases of severe pulmonary disease related to electronic cigarettes have been reported, and the region has spread to 36 states and the US Virgin Islands.

A case where CDC is “confirmed” is defined as a patient who has developed a respiratory disease after use of electronic cigarettes and has undergone a close examination to eliminate the possibility of infection. The definition of a “probable” case is a patient who has developed lung disease after e-cigarette use and has undergone some examination.

Although a series of illnesses are still unrelated to specific products or ingredients, CDC calls on consumers to stop sucking electronic cigarettes.
