Bikini atoll in satellite image: Between 1946 and 1958, the US Army detonated more than 20 atomic bombs there. The atoll, located about 12 degrees north of the equator and about 3,000 kilometers northeast of New Guinea, had been chosen as the test area because it was far from all shipping and air traffic routes.
