The United States is threatening to destroy any possible long-range missile shipment from Iran to Venezuela, a senior Trump administration official told Fox Network Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"Every effort will be made to stop long-range missile shipments, and if they reach Venezuela in any way they will be destroyed there," the senior official said.

State Department special envoy to Iran and Venezuela, Elliott Abrams, said "the transfer of long-range missiles from Iran to Venezuela are not acceptable to the United States and we will not allow or tolerate this."

Officials have not said whether such shipments are expected to begin soon, but Iran and Venezuela are partners in the arms trade.

In August, Maduro said buying missiles from Iran would be a "good idea" after in May Tehran shipped fuel to Venezuela, which is suffering from severe shortages.

Washington is concerned that the two states, which are under stiff US sanctions, are expanding cooperation between them.

"Iran has announced its intention to trade in arms, Venezuela is a clear target because these two isolated regimes already have relations," Abrams said.

"Venezuela is paying gold to buy fuel from Iran, and there is an Iranian presence in the country. Venezuela's economy has collapsed, so every gold bullion to Iran is tens of thousands of dollars that Venezuelans need for food and medicine."

Last week, the arms embargo on Iran ended, despite opposition from the Trump administration, which announced that in its eyes it still remained intact.

A senior administration official said that as Iran sent missiles to the Houthis in Yemen, they were ready, willing and able to deliver them to Venezuela and other potential buyers.

He said it would jeopardize stability in Latin America and the Caribbean, especially Venezuela's neighbors Brazil, Colombia and Guyana.

According to various reports, Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran, also has close relations with the socialist regime in Caracas.
