A private jet went up in flames yesterday (Tuesday) during an attempt to take off from a small airport in the Houston area, but all 21 passengers survived and left without serious injuries, US aviation officials said.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft, model MD-87, started taking off around 10:00 a.m. but hit the airport fence and caught fire.
Waller County Sheriff Troy Gidery said all 18 passengers and three crew members were rescued, and two people were evacuated to the hospital but are not life-threatening.
He said the plane was on its way to Boston to watch a baseball game between the Houston Astros and the Red Sox.
Federal authorities will investigate the circumstances of the accident.
District Judge Trey Dohon said the plane did not appear to reach the desired altitude at the end of the runway and veered onto a nearby road until it landed in an open field north of the compound and caught fire.
"This is a good day, a celebration for many people," Texas Public Safety Department spokesman Stephen Woodard told reporters at the scene.
