(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, MAY 07 - "The European Union is the only democratic region in the world that exports on a large scale. About 50% of what is produced in Europe is exported to about 90 countries, including Covax. doses have been exported and about 200 million doses distributed to Europeans. We invite all those who are involved in the debate on the temporary waiver of patents to join us in committing to export a large part of what they produce ".

Thus the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von derLeyen, replied, at the end of the summit in Porto, to the US proposal to grant a temporary exemption to patents to allow less developed countries to produce vaccines at home.

"Vaccines are needed now - he added -. The temporary waiver on patents" does not solve the problem in the short and medium term. What is needed is a sharing of the serums, the export of doses, and investments to increase "production capacity, even in African countries. (ANSA).
