A giant wave and a samurai: the city of Gyoda transforms its rice fields into classic Japanese works.

About ten municipal officials from the city of Gyoda weed in the rice fields to preserve the best aspect of their work of art.

The city turns rice paddies into art by planting different colored rice plants.

This year, the city illustrated the Japanese culture of Ukiyoe and Kabuki to mark the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Shuhei Tagashira, representative of the city of Gyoda, explains: “This year we are hosting the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after they have been postponed for a year.

We wanted to show the Japanese arts of Ukiyoe and Kabuki in a paddy field, which is also an important part of Japanese culture.

By showing art, which greatly influenced the world in the 19th century, we wanted to present Japan to the world.

We also wanted to help the Japanese rediscover their culture.

A “fun” project for Kiyo Hoshino who discovers the fields: “I just learned that they invite many volunteers to create a design. It is a great opportunity for the locals to experience rice farming, which people are not used to doing these days. The city is really taking advantage of these vast rice fields to mobilize and bring the community together. "
