"It's impressive to see how many there are," exclaims the police chief of Santa Isabel, a small village in central Argentina.

“At the police station, the beetles lifted the roof.

At the gas station, they blocked the pipes.

“Insects are everywhere.

And the historic heat wave that the South American country is currently experiencing is not for nothing.

The extreme heat caused these critters to grow and invade the city.

“We saw them leave the surrounding countryside to head for the city center,” explained Christian Echegaray, the deputy mayor.

“They were falling on the roofs like hail.

They were also seen landing on the road, hitting the windshield or roof of passing cars.

These critters are not considered dangerous or aggressive.

But their presence brings a pestilential smell.

And they can damage structures as well as cause accidents.

Temperatures continue to rise across the country.
