“It is the largest cut diamond, all colors combined, that we have seen appear at auction,” boasts Sophie Stevens.
This jewelry specialist for the Sotheby's auction house presents for the first time in 20 years the "Enigma", a rare carbonado black diamond exhibited in Dubai (United Arab Emirates).
According to the expert, the stone would have been created when a meteorite or an asteroid hit the Earth, more than 2.6 billion years ago.
Enough to estimate its sale at more than five million dollars.
Unlike white diamonds and other colored diamonds that come from kimberlite rocks through volcanic eruptions, "carbonado diamonds are found in sedimentary or alluvial deposits near the Earth's surface, or even on the surface," says Sophia Stevens.
The 59.60-carat Pink Star holds the record for the most expensive diamond ever sold, fetching $71 million at a Sotheby's sale in April 2017.

The synthetic diamond wants to shake up the world of jewelry
The “Enigma” weighs 555.55 carats and will be auctioned in an online sale, in a single lot, from February 3 to 9.
“We accept cryptocurrencies for diamonds, as we have done for other important stones in the past”, specifies Sophie Stevens.
"Last year, for example, in Hong Kong, we sold the Key 10138 diamond. It sold for $12.3 million, which was paid for in cryptocurrencies."
