The large screens for public viewing are missing - but many Germans do not stay on the couch at home at the EM.

Telefonica, Telekom and Vodafone reported download records in their mobile networks for the past Tuesday evening.

There wasn't that much traffic even on New Year's Eve.

O2 alone transported a total of 800,000 gigabytes over its mobile networks on Tuesday evening during the runtime of the game between Germany and France. A new record. At Vodafone and in the Telekom network, the German national team's first appearance at the European Championships resulted in more data traffic than ever before, as the companies confirmed to SPIEGEL.

Football games have replaced New Year's Eve as the peak load on mobile networks. The European Championship opening match between Italy and Turkey had previously held this record, and before that the Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea at the end of May. Even when it comes to current events, Germans are increasingly using their mobile phones: March 24th is number 3 in Telekom's download records. On that day, Chancellor Angela Merkel withdrew the »Easter rest« at a press conference.

This is made possible by the increasing performance of cellular networks: The 5G expansion is progressing, radio masts are increasingly being upgraded with a fiber optic connection for peak loads. The streaming providers have also expanded their capacities after initial problems. In addition, the hardware has caught up: even mid-range smartphones can now play football games well.

But even the latest cell phone cannot change one thing: Depending on the streaming service used, it can take up to half a minute for the shot on the device to hit the target, as a current test by the specialist magazine »c't« has shown.

The apps from ARD and ZDF performed particularly well here.

The testers received the picture on their smartphone with a delay of just three seconds.

That is a good second faster than with a normal cable TV connection.

With the streaming provider Waipu, on the other hand, it took 27 seconds for fans to cheer or groan in disappointment.
