It was 50 years ago that a volcano had erupted for the last time on the Canary Island of La Palma (placemark) - until Sunday.

Now there was an eruption, then lava came out of the Cumbre Vieja - and surprised the residents.

Resident:

»I'm very scared.

We didn't expect that.

We have been warned but did not expect it.

We had earthquakes all night and this morning, I had to hold the television. "

Local resident:

»I don't know how to explain it.

It was powerful.

To feel such a sudden explosion.

The warning level was orange, there were a lot of vibrations.

But with the orange warning level, I couldn't imagine it would go so quickly. "

Between last Saturday and Wednesday there had been more than 1,000 earthquakes in the region, up to a magnitude of 3.4.

How quickly a possible volcanic eruption would follow could not be foreseen.

Nevertheless, 500 people whose mobility is restricted, for example wheelchair users, were evacuated early on.

Others were advised to pack emergency bags.

By late evening, the number of evacuees from the surrounding communities grew to 5000. The authorities assume that the number will rise to 10,000.

Local residents:

»It was all very stressful, especially for the older people and for my generation, who never experienced it.

We know we need to support one another as families.

My parents didn't go to the information center, they came to our house.

Now we're waiting for information from the authorities to see what we should do in the next few hours. "

La Palma has 83,000 inhabitants, mass tourism like on many other Canary Islands, such as Gran Canaria or Lanzarote, does not exist here.

The residents already looked at the residents on Sunday at the lava that reached the first houses.

So far, however, no one has been injured in the outbreak.
