He survived the last mountain stage with confidence - now Primoz Roglic can plan for the festivities. The Slovenian professional cyclist is about to win the Vuelta.

The Slovenian professional cyclist Primoz Roglic is in the lead in the 74th Vuelta. The 29-year-old from Team Lotto-Jumbo took fifth place on the last mountain stage of the Tour of Spain on Saturday in the success of his compatriot Tadej Pogacar and goes with 2:33 minutes ahead of Spaniard Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) on the last section on Sunday to Madrid. There, the red leader jersey is traditionally no longer attacked.

On the 190.4 km between Arenas de San Pedro and the Plataforma de Gredos Roglic was no longer in danger on Saturday, the Slovene held to the home straight the rear wheel of his worst opponent Valverde. Only top talent Pogacar of the UAE Team Emirates was able to break away from the favorites group on the last climb of the first category 38 km before the finish line. With his solo ride, he pushed the Colombian Nairo Quintana (Movistar) out of the podium in third.

After the triumph to Madrid Roglic could register on Sunday as the first Slovenian driver in the list of winners of a Grand Tour. Two Slovenians on the podium of one of the three major country tours would also be premieres. On the 106.6 km flat in the Spanish capital, the sprinters have another chance to win the day.
