WhatsApp quietly released yesterday (Monday) a critical update for iOS and Android, which closes serious security holes.

According to a report on the GBHackers website, WhatsApp did not provide many details regarding the security breach, in which it actually admits that it is already possible to take advantage of the existing flaw that allows questionable parties to hack into a smartphone remotely.

"The two vulnerabilities marked with a 'critical' severity level were found by WhatsApp's internal security team," GBHackers said.

This is a Zero-Day weakness, a nickname for the use of a security breach that was not known until now and from the date of publication no days have passed at all (0 days).

According to WhatsApp, the various identified failures allowed malicious actors to penetrate the device by sending a malicious video file, or during a video call between users.

Once the attackers get access to the phone, they can run malware, steal sensitive data or even take over the device completely.

How will you update WhatsApp?

  • iPhone users: in the App Store search for Whatsapp in the search bar > and then click "Update"

  • Android users: in the Play Store search for Whatsapp in the search bar > and then click "Update"
