The protective shell around vehicles is improving moment by moment.

No matter which safety lane we touch, or what brand or category the vehicle comes from, one can discern a clear convergent equation that strives for maximum protection for the occupants of the car and those around it.

It begins with the design phase of energy absorption areas and protection cages, continues with the spine itself that includes all chassis components, and ends with a variety of electronic systems designed to prevent the occurrence of the accident and also reduce its results if the worst has nevertheless become inevitable.

In fact the only thing that has not changed in this equation, is the monkey still holding the steering wheel.

And some would say that not only has he not improved, but he has become complacent, self-confident and in the defense systems that surround him, until he actually gets worse driver as time goes on.

This time we will not discuss the truth of the allegations of deteriorating driving abilities, but one of the safety systems that has been in use for about a decade and is becoming more common.

It is called BSD (Blind Spot Detection, some use nicknames), and it treats vehicle identification in "dead space" - the area behind and on the side of the car in the correct direction of the mirrors does not really exist, but because most drivers do not know the correct direction of mirrors. - Not always fully or effectively covered by mirrors. Most often this safety system consists of a collection of different sensors (cameras or radar, or both), which monitor the movement behind the vehicle and on both sides, and if they detect movement in the defined area, the driver receives an audible alert And in a visual indication (usually in the area or on the mirrors).

In some of the new cars, the camera is installed at the bottom of the mirrors (Photo: manufacturer's website)

Is it possible to install a "dead space" vehicle identification system in all vehicles?

Until recently, if the identification system was not installed at the car manufacturing stage, it could not be added later. But this situation has changed and today the technology is more available, and various installation kits from unknown sources exist at some car accessory installers. There are even a variety of such kits available for purchase. On Aliexpress, and those who also have good hands can install it on their own.

Recently, a new system called Baware BSD joined the field. It was developed by SerVision - an Israeli start-up company that has developed the option of compressing video in narrow bandwidth - which allows High quality, real-time video transmission over the cellular network.

In 2018, the start-up company was acquired by ADI Systems, which has been busy for some time with a change of focus from an installation company, to a company that offers solutions for managing vehicle fleets, security and safety.

How does a BSD system work?

Whenever a vehicle appears in the rear, right or left, the indicator monitors installed on the front beams illuminate and alert you that there is a vehicle in the dead space that may have escaped the driver's gaze.

If the driver activates the signal lever, an audible warning is also sounded warning that the area the driver plans to reach is not available.

Their warning range varies between different systems and ranges from 10-27 meters behind the vehicle.

Note the location of the indicator.

In this location the lighting is almost invisible to daylight.

What sets Baware apart?

The variety of systems available on the market require external drilling in the bumpers to install cameras or sensors.

The Baware BSD system is the only one installed on the rear window of the vehicle and does not require external drilling.

The only drilling concerns the indicator lighting inside the car which is usually installed on the front side beams.

The system itself is radar based, the rear monitoring range is 70 meters and at an angle of 180 degrees.

It starts working at a speed of 5 km / h and alerts with an orange visual indication at every entry of vehicles into the "dead" area up to a range of 27 meters behind. From a speed of 40 km / h, it will also activate an audible indicator, if a lever The signal is activated in the same direction in which the obstacle was discovered and at a range of 20 meters behind.

Disturbing on the trip or worth the investment?

The weather did not allow testing of the Baware BSD system in fog or winter weather conditions (rain, snow, etc.), but did in extreme heat conditions. After many hours of traveling in varied conditions day and night, one can sum up and say that she does her main task efficiently. It detects any vehicle - including a two-wheeler in the dead zone - and manages to alert even when the speed gap between it and the other vehicle is large. For example, when another vehicle overtakes at a very high speed in relation to it or vice versa. The voice indicator is also effective when overtaking or returning from it - of course assuming the driver has activated the signal lever in the right direction (similar to existing in original BSD systems).

However, the Baware BSD system is not without drawbacks and in particular requires accurate positioning of the indicator lighting otherwise it is not visible in daylight. It also has a hard time finding bikes and scooters of any kind, as well as motorcycles that "close" quickly - but all of these also challenge the goodness of the original systems.

Throughout the inspection period it was accurate in warnings, with the only time a false warning was observed was in a traffic jam on a long distance road (20-40 km / h) in a maintenance work area when the safety fence was attached very close to the lane, and in some sections was accidentally caught as a "dead area" object.

This system as well as others - are the basis of the autonomous car, which will one day also appear (Photo: Manufacturer's website)

How much does it cost or should I buy a BDS system on Aliexpress?

The price of the Baware BSD system is NIS 1,690, including VAT and installation. At the moment, the Ministry of Transportation or insurance companies are not willing to subsidize the system, even when it - according to the Ministry of Transportation's safety index - entitles the car to one safety point (out of 8).

This is a significantly more expensive price than what can be bought on Aliexpress for example, but that is not wisdom.

Everything is cheaper in the Chinese supermarket, which remains significantly cheaper even when you put in the installation cost at a car accessories installer.

But ... the other BSD systems require drilling in the bumpers (usually the size of reverse sensors), their quality in terms of the unknown monitoring range, the warning range is significantly lower (between 10-15 meters compared to 27 meters in the Baware BSD system), and in general product quality Unknown and also not sure uniform between estimates or over time.

The various assistance systems, such as BSD, largely compensate for human errors in order to prevent road accidents (Photo: Manufacturer's website)

I am buying a new car, will the importer install such a system for me?

Not in all of them.

Some car importers are not willing to add different comfort and safety systems because they claim that the consumer sees these systems as an integral part of the car he purchased, and if any problem arises in such a system, he first and foremost blames the importer who sold him the car.

Other importers are willing to offer the system, sometimes being offered as part of the benefit of buying the vehicle.

Between 220,000 and 250,000 new cars are sold in Israel each year.

In an increasing number of them there is an original BSD system, sometimes already from the basic level of finish and sometimes only at the high levels of finish.

Some have a more advanced system (offered in various nicknames) that also includes active steering action, to prevent a lane from crossing if a vehicle is discovered "in the dead zone", whether the signal lever has been activated or not.

There are now new cars with a system that combines a "dead zone" vehicle alert and active steering action, to prevent passing when the lane is not clear (Photo: Manufacturer's website)

Currently, the CBS (and most of the world) are consolidating the BSD system in question here, and the active one, under one umbrella without diagnosis. According to CBS data, 17.7% of all private cars - excluding taxis, trucks and buses Sold in 2019 is an original BSD system (as mentioned, some are also active). The 2020 data have not yet been published, but there is no doubt that in the past year and this year, more new cars have joined that offered an original BSD system, some of which are also active.

But the system is not just for new cars, and it may even be better to target it in the used market.

According to data from 2019 in Israel, about 3.6 million vehicles moved at the end of that year. Some without any original original safety systems at all, and some with Mobilai and Mobon that do not cover this area. For all those vehicles - private, commercial, Taxis, trucks and buses - this is an important addition that can at best prevent annoying and painful tin damage in the pocket, and at worst a much more serious accident.Or we will just learn to use mirrors correctly, we know, the chances are slim.
