The sprinter Blessing Afripa smashed the Israeli record in the 200 meters tonight (between Wednesday and Thursday), when he set an amazing time of 20.17 seconds and set the fourth best result this year in the world on the way to the finals of the World Under-20 Athletics Championship, in Colombia.
The talented 18-year-old runner, accompanied by his coach Igor Balon, reached the semi-finals, after in the preliminaries he broke the Israeli record he set at 20.37 seconds, this time jumping after two hours of rest, due to a local storm.
When he positioned himself on the jump-off, Afrifa led from the start and even slowed down towards the end before crossing in first place in the heat and in first place overall with a result of fourth in this year's class in the world (13th place all time under the age of 20).
If this is not enough, to understand how high-quality his result was, this is a time that would have earned him sixth place in the Olympic final in Tokyo 2020. Now, Afrifa can fantasize about a place on the podium, in the final that will take place tonight (2:00 Israel time).
This is the sixth time that the runner has broken his personal and national record, when it started at the end of March when he stopped the clock in a competition in Tel Aviv at 20.83 seconds, when at the beginning of June, again on the track in Tel Aviv, he achieved 20.71 seconds.
