What has Biden done for Latinos? This is what the White House stands for

The government celebrates that lowering taxes, rent assistance, and education and health incentives benefit hundreds of thousands of Hispanics.

President Joe Biden came to the White House with

three important promises for the Latino community:

pass immigration reform to legalize some 11 million undocumented immigrants, protect Dreamers under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program ( DACA) and granting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to the thousands of Venezuelans who have emigrated and thus live and work in the United States.

Biden has yet to deliver on the first two promises in his first seven months in office.

Attempts to push through immigration reform have crashed through the Republican wall, while a federal judge ruled in July that the DACA program, which hosts more than 650,000 people, is illegal.

The president promised to appeal, but for now this mechanism that protects those who arrived in the country as minors hangs by a thread.

It is not yet clear which undocumented immigrants could be legalized through the budget promoted by Democrats

Regarding the third promise, Biden granted TPS to more than 300,000 Venezuelans in March and the government announced in early August that it was

extending

the deadline for them to request it

from 180 days to 18 months

.

At the same time, humanitarian organizations have asked Biden for a new TPS that protects Central American immigrants.

The White House, however, defends having achieved a range of great strides for Latinos in more than 200 days of government thanks to the plan Reconstructing Better (

Building Back Better,

in English) that seeks to

create jobs, reduce taxes for the middle class and reduce the expenses of working families.

Within this strategy, Biden celebrates that a large part of the 10.9 million Hispanic families without medical coverage

will be able to obtain insurance

and that some five million Latinos will access a dental, ophthalmological and ENT plan.

In addition, the

renegotiation of the price of drugs will

favor Latino families, they argue, as they use between 10% and 40% less drugs than white Americans to treat the same diseases.

At an educational level, the White House applauds that

40% of Latino children of 3 and 4 years old

who currently do not go to kindergarten due to the high cost of the centers, will now be able to attend with a new incentive and subsidy plan for families .

It also anticipates that thousands of Latinos will enroll in

community colleges

, which are lower-cost two-year universities, after the president announced that the first two years of study will be free.

On the other hand, the Administration will encourage the hiring of more Hispanic teachers, who currently represent

only 9% of that profession nationwide, despite the fact that 27% of the student body is of Latino origin.

Studies have shown that having teachers who look like their students raises your graduation and retention rates in school and college.

Dreamers protest to demand that the Biden Administration protect the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

The aid for the payment of rent is another of the axes highlighted by the US Government in its policies favorable to the Latino community, within the framework of the debate around the federal moratorium on evictions that expired at the end of July and that the Administration extended a few days later.

While this gave temporary relief to the hundreds of thousands facing having to leave their homes amid the worst coronavirus rally, the moratorium is expected to be challenged again in the courts and tenants pay what they owe.

That is why these rent payments are so important for

Latinos because they are, along with the black community, those who face the most evictions,

before and during the pandemic.

The Biden government also highlights the child tax credit, which according to its calculations will favor 4.5 million Latino families and reduce the Hispanic poverty rate in the country by 39%.
