A paralyzing sensation, intense pain, uncontrollable contractions in the muscles, among others: these are the effects that a person who receives a shock from a stun gun, also known as a 'taser', could suffer.
But what exactly are they and how do they work?
This type of weapon that is used by the authorities in several countries has been the subject of many controversies.

What is a 'taser'?
It is an electroshock weapon that, when used on the body of a person or animal, temporarily incapacitates it.
A 'taser' shoots electrified darts or it can also be pressed directly against a person to immobilize them.
The darts it shoots may or may not penetrate the skin, says the company that makes them.
The electric shocks produced throw the muscles of the body out of control and can cause severe pain.

What the 'taser' could do to your heart
Medical experts say that if a person is shocked by a taser dart close to the chest, a possible result is a dramatic increase in the person's heart rate.
For example, if someone at rest has from 72 beats per minute it could go up to 220 beats per minute after the shock.
In their court documents, the company that makes them reports that the "peak load" voltage of a taser in the impact range is up to 40,000 volts, but is an average of 600 volts during firing, according to CNN.

A controversial case recently occurred in Minnesota, in which a volunteer service agent fired a firearm at a 20-year-old by mistaking it for a taser.
The man died.
So how does a firearm differ from a taser?
1. Tasers tend to be lighter and have a different grip and feel, former vice president of taser guns Steve Tuttle said in 2015.
2. Also, when a taser is unlocked, an LED control panel lights up.
3. Also, they have a different type of holster than a firearm, and many have at least have a bright yellow on the device.
