The question of religious freedom appears to some as a luxury. A variable geometry freedom, according to cultural and religious traditions, which would not be essential to the life of societies. This is not the view of the United States. They defend religious freedom as a fundamental right. It is also one of the axes of their foreign policy. The State Department (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) has a specialized section, the Office for International Religious Freedom, to oversee this. It is currently headed by Daniel Nadel, a lawyer by training. Since 1999, this body has produced an annual report on the state of this freedom in the world, analyzed with great precision, country by country. Two hundred nations are thus studied. This document - a mine of nearly 10,000 pages, written in English - is easily accessible on the State Department website. It constitutes a reference in the genre but it is relatively poorly known.
