Switzerland made a successful start to the World Cup in Qatar.

Coach Murat Yakin's team won against Cameroon 1-0 (0-0) through a goal by Breel Embolo (48th minute).

Cameroon is in the difficult Group G before the World Cup.

In the evening, co-favorite Brazil will play against Serbia (8 p.m., ZDF/MagentaTV).

"At least the semi-finals," exclaimed Cameroon's national coach and legend Rigobert Song as a goal.

A daring plan by the former Bundesliga defender, who initially put his team on the defensive and hoped for a counterattack - but that was exactly what put the favorite Swiss under pressure.

In the tenth minute, Toko Ekambi shot over the goal after a counterattack.

Switzerland tried to control the game, the more dangerous team remained Cameroon.

Silvian Widmer prevented Ekambi from completing the game with a tackle (35').

The Nati ventured further forward, but went into the break without a shot on goal because Jean-Charles Castelletto separated Embolo from the left of the penalty area fairly (39') and Manuel Akanji headed a corner just wide to the right (45').

Embolo does not score and celebrate

Cameroon missed the previously close assignment in the first Swiss ball relay, at the end of which Xherdan Shaqiri found the free Embolo.

The attacker, who was born in Cameroon's capital Yaoundé, completed from a few meters (48th).

And refrained from celebrating a goal.

The lead was further evidence of the efficiency of the Swiss, who then strengthened and insisted on the decision.

This was prevented by André Onana, the goalkeeper parried a central shot by Ruben Vargas (66th).

Choupo-Moting still without a goal in his third World Cup

In Cameroon, hopes also rested on Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who showed in the Bundesliga for FC Bayern that he is in top form.

In the 57th minute he failed from a tight angle and was substituted after 74 minutes.

Qatar is his third World Cup.

He was goalless in five appearances in 2010 and 2014.

As a result, the game unraveled due to a few changes, the Swiss were very stable defensively and didn't allow anything anymore.

The win puts them in a good position to progress in difficult Group G. Brazil are waiting on Monday.
