The German soccer players confidently defeated their pursuers Portugal in qualifying for the World Cup.

The team of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg prevailed on Tuesday evening in the Estádio de São Luís in Faro with 3: 1 (3: 1) against the hosts.

With this, the league leaders extended their lead in Group H over the Portuguese to five points.

In front of only 500 spectators, goalscorer Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich (15th minute), Wolfsburg Svenja Huth (23rd) and Chelsea professional Melanie Leupolz (28th) met for the DFB women.

For Schüller it was already the 23rd goal in the 34th international match.

The clearly inferior Portuguese came through a penalty caused by goalkeeper Merle Frohms to mean 1: 3 by Carole da Silva Costa (34th).

Frohms' misfortune does not matter

When conceding a penalty, the regular goalkeeper Frohms had bad luck: The ball first hit the post and then from the Frankfurt's back into the net.

It was no longer close against the strongest opponent in the qualifying group, even if the German soccer players were less dominant in the second half against aggressively playing Portuguese women;

Defender Marina Hegering from FC Bayern Munich celebrated a successful comeback in the national team after a long injury break.

The DFB selection also won their sixth game on the way to the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The second leg against Portugal is on April 9, and Serbia is on April 12.

Only the first in the group qualify directly for the final tournament.

The second play in the playoffs for two more places.
