In the third game under the new national coach Hansi Flick, the German team won again.

The footballers of the DFB achieved a 4-0 (2-0) victory in Iceland in qualifying for the World Cup.

Serge Gnabry (5th minute), Antonio Rüdiger (24th), Leroy Sané (56th) and Timo Werner (89th) scored the goals in the safe away win.

With this, the Flick team (15 points) are leading group J with four remaining game days on the way to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Armenia (11 points) had previously failed in a 1-1 draw against Liechtenstein.

As in the 6-0 win against Armenia, Gnabry once again scored the quick opening goal against a generally overwhelmed opponent.

After a sharp cross from his Munich club colleague Sané, Gnabry only had to push the ball over the line from close range (5th).

The German team dominated and showed again and again nice combinations even without the playmaker Marco Reus, who was injured in the knee. The second goal bore the signature of the new national coach, because standard situations should become more important under Flick and a successful variant could be observed in the 24th minute: After a free-kick flank from Joshua Kimmich from the half-field, Antonio Rüdiger headed the back post to 2 : 0.

The second half began with a great chance for Werner (48th), shortly afterwards Johann Gudmundsson shot at the post and Albert Gudmundsson shot into goal, but the Icelander was offside.

The defense of the DFB-Elf always had minor problems when Iceland picked up the pace, but that was rare and they did not concede - and so in the third game of the still young Flick era they managed to win to zero.

One of the winners of the first Flick games is Sané, who also played conspicuously against Iceland after good performances recently and made the decision with a powerful shot under the crossbar in the 56th minute.

Previously, Leon Goretzka had sent the Munich worth seeing in depth.

Werner hit the final score.

The next matchday in the World Cup qualification is on October 8th for the DFB-Elf, then Romania is waiting.

Three days later on October 11, the German team will play in North Macedonia, the first leg against the North Macedonians was lost at the end of March.

With currently only four points, Iceland has little hope of participating in the World Cup.
