This coming Saturday evening, at 19:00, Hapoel Haifa and Hapoel Nof Hagalil will meet in the sixth round of the Premier League, in what has surprisingly become a top game. Yaron Hochnaboim will begin his personal preparations for the event, which will open a few minutes after Shabbat, today (Friday).

"I arranged with the manager of the stadium in Haifa that I would arrive on Friday morning, and leave a bag with everything I needed - clothes for the game, toiletries, an arrangement for evening prayers and equipment for havdalah," the successful coach of Nof Hagalil told Shivi, which is published on Saturday.

In the interview, Hochnaboim explained to Alon Pearl how he combines his football career with the religious lifestyle he has maintained in recent years. "On the day of a game, I get up as usual, go to the synagogue, do a kiddush and a meal. Then I look for a minyan for the mincha prayer, and if I have time I will go to sleep a little. We set up with the players on the field two hours before the game. Towards the pitch.I have an hour's walk. "

"When I get to the stadium, I take a shower and get dressed. If there is a time, like Shabbat, I will do a havdalah before the start of the game. But there is not always time. In many cases, Shabbat comes out during the game, so I say on the bench ' The difference in the half-time break in one of the rooms on the field. "

- Saturday you have a "discount", because the game takes place in your city of residence.

What do you do when you play in remote places?

"When the game starts on Saturday, as was the case in our last game against Hapoel Tel Aviv, I sleep in a hotel or B&B in the area, and walk to the stadium. It is not the most natural and comfortable, but even when I have to walk for an hour, I accept it with love."

Beyond the games, Hochnaboim is not ready to hold training on Saturday either.

"Even when we play on Sunday, and even when there is a two-day Rosh Hashanah or Pesach that is close to Shabbat, there will be no training on Shabbat. It is my decision. At most, we practice at the end of Shabbat."

Hochnaboim (50) was born and raised in Haifa to a secular-traditional family. "We went to a synagogue on Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur, we did not mix meat with milk, but nothing beyond that." In 2006, when he was 35, he started putting on tefillin. "They always ask what happened, how I started. The truth is that there was nothing special, no one told me anything, and it just came to me from within. I decided I wanted it, and I just went to buy tefillin. After two years I met someone who told me it was better to pray in minyan, And the next day I was in a synagogue. That's how I progressed slowly.

"Six years passed, and in 2012 I went to synagogue on Saturday night. I felt there was someone behind me telling me to keep Shabbat. I just felt it, even though there was really no one there. I told myself I had not prepared or announced, so I will give it up, but it lasted like this for a few weeks, and since then I have started keeping Shabbat. "

Hochnaboim says that after victories, he was forced to be interviewed for television on Saturday, and when he refused, he was fined NIS 7,000 to NIS 8,000.

"I had disagreements about it at the time with the TV and the league director, but in practice there is no chance that I will be interviewed on Saturday.

- Do you define yourself as a religious person?

"I do not know, I do not define myself and do not wear a kippah. I pray three times a day, keep kosher and do everything I can."
