Trailer for the movie "Riders of Justice" (Rotterdam Festival)

The cinemas have been open for about two months, but many and many are still not happy to return to them - what to do, we have not really learned to live in the shadow of the corona. What is left, then, is to be based on the home viewing option, and at least in the cinematic sector, the selection available in Israel is not alarming. In fact, and we have written this many times before, if you are looking for an up-to-date, high-quality and varied cinema menu, you can only find it in one place - the yes movie channels.

Thus, for example, the satellite company now exclusively offers what it sees as one of the best films of 2021, but has not been screened or screened anywhere except on their platform - "Riders of Justice". It is currently available in the yes Store, meaning for an additional fee for the subscription fee.

In his native Denmark, the film hit theaters and even broke box offices.

It stars Mads Mickelsen, who in recent years has appeared in every possible Danish hit, including "Another Round," which won the Oscar for Best International Film this year.

This time, he plays a combat soldier whose partner died during a mysterious explosion on a train in Copenhagen.

The official investigation reveals that it was an accident, but then an eccentric computer man who specializes in calculating probabilities turns to him and claims - it is not possible that this is a malfunction.

He claims that a motorcycle gang called the "Riders of Justice" is responsible for the disaster.

That is, if the soldier seeks revenge - he has an address.

But does it make sense to go crazy, or is his wife's death, like life in general, just an unfortunate coincidence?

The journey towards the answer will lead the protagonist on an exciting journey, during which he will rediscover himself and his surviving daughter, and connect with the eccentric mathematical genius and his equally puzzling friends, and form with them a kind of alternative, strange and charming family.

I happened to watch "Riders of Justice" at a New York cinema two months ago, and I relished every second. It is a film that has it all: it is violent but also full of compassion, funny but also exciting, passionate and thought-provoking, and there is no point in trying to put it in a box or decide which genre it is. What is certain: it is sweeping, fun and superbly made.

Behind all this is Anders Thomas Jensen, one of the most prolific filmmakers in the Danish industry. He directed other films that were also distributed in the country, for example "The Green Butchers", also starring Mixlan. In addition, his resume also has a variety of scripts, for example for the Oscar-winning "In a Better World". His Hollywood record is less successful, and includes a partnership in writing The Dark Tower, a failed cinematic adaptation of Stephen King's writings.

I'm having a zoom conversation with Jensen on the occasion of the film's rise in yes, and open with the question I'll present in recent years to every creator from Denmark - how is it that such a small country produces so much quality content. "You can say the same about Israel," he praises, then turns his gaze back to his homeland. "The reasons for the Danish success? There is government support here and also good film schools. If you have talent, you will have a chance to prove it. Besides, Denmark is a very non-dramatic country. If you write a script, it's hard to find ways to kill people. If your hero An unnatural death, there are only two options - a car accident or cancer. We do not have wars. Therefore, when you write dramas, you focus on the family cell. Intense and good movies. "

An alternative name to the film could have been "Case Music".

What conclusion did you reach at the end of writing the script - is there a reason for everything, or is everything coincidental?

"It's hard for us to accept that life has no meaning or logic. Our mind is constantly looking for a connection between one thing and another and sometimes even inventing those connections, so that the world will work out for us logically. In the end, if you do not believe in God, you come to sad understanding. "That life is nothing but a sequence of coincidences. All we have left is to accept it and stay as close as possible to who we love. That is the message of the film."

There is no plan.

There are not many movies that deal seriously with the relationship between a father and his daughter. How much did you draw inspiration from your personal life?

"I have a daughter the age of the protagonist's daughter, so it's very personal to me. Of course the script is very extreme in relation to my reality, but let's say the subject is no stranger to me. "With his teenage daughter, but then finds himself in a situation where he has to start functioning as her father. Every character in the film has lost her family in one way or another, but the protagonist is the only one who has a chance at redemption."

The film is a bit of a thriller, a bit of drama and a bit of comedy. How hard was it to balance all these elements and find the right tone?

"It was our biggest challenge, and the thing that demanded the most from me. I knew it in advance. For me, the whole film is a kind of experiment, to see if I can combine such different dimensions. There are characters in the film who behave realistically and those who are really exaggerated, and not "It was easy to find the glue between them. The script was funnier than the end result, but I cut out some good jokes at the editing stage. It was a painful but necessary concession to keep the balance."

Coming soon?

The filmmaker himself is not a particularly smiling person, and even gets angry at a certain point, when I point out that Mickelsen appears in every Danish film that comes up in Israel. "You journalists like to find such connections, but they are completely artificial," he says. "There are a lot of movies on the market. If it bothers you that the same actor appears in more than one movie, watch another movie. No one came and asked - why John Lennon and Paul McCartney appear in every Beatles show."

You've been a professional partner of Mickelsen for twenty years. I guess you've already said everything about him, and yet I'll ask you a few words about him.

"He's the perfect player. I can't think of anything he can't do. I can only praise him over and over again."

Throughout the film, one of the sub-characters falls victim to her need to share on Instagram everything she does, and it costs her an unpleasant encounter with the biker gang. "I did not mean to make any statement here on social media, it's just a plot move, but if you saw it as a critique, I'm very happy," he declares. "I see what my daughter sees online, and that's shit. "Hide behind the devices and write something bad about someone. Before you click 'send', think about whether you would dare to go and tell him that inside. If not, then do not post it."

It's easy for me to imagine how the film gets a Hollywood adaptation. Is it in the oven?

"There's nothing more concrete, but we had proposals. I also worked in Hollywood, and the difference is that there is more money there, which means there are more people defending their investment, and therefore more people interfering with your work. In the Danish industry, budgets are much lower, but you can Do what you want. "
