Football clubs and political parties usually don't have much to do with each other.

But in the Zillertal there is a huge bang between the FPÖ and Werder Bremen.

Zell am Ziller - Bundesliga climbers Werder Bremen pitch their tents for the eleventh time for the summer training camp in the Zillertal.

"We always feel comfortable there," said head of sport Frank Baumann beforehand.

The people of Bremen didn't feel so comfortable when they saw who their neighbor was this time.

The Austrian right-wing populist party FPÖ spread right next to the training ground of the North Germans.

The former ruling party organized a day of action there.

Werder responded with a tweet clearly showing the party's flag.

"Clear edge against Nazis," formulates the football club's Twitter message.

The echo was not long in coming.

Tyrol's FPÖ boss Markus Abwerzger demands an apology within a week, otherwise there will be a complaint, as he told the Austrian news agency APA on Monday.

It is a question of denigrating a democratic party that has been firmly anchored in party democracy for decades and is very popular with voters, said the state party leader.

"The tweet also represents a trivialization of the crimes of National Socialism."

FPÖ attacks Werder Bremen: "Left dirty Piefke"

FPÖ spokesman Leo Kohlbauer shot back on Twitter: “No one needs these left-leaning Piefke with us.

Let's celebrate Rainbow Ramadan in the Buntland.” Abwerzger described the people of Bremen as “obvious hollow heads”.

The FPÖ repeatedly has to put up with accusations of being too close to right-wing extremism.

The Freedom Party of Austria was represented in the government from 2017 to 2019 as a small coalition partner of the conservative ÖVP.

Werder Bremen has long campaigned against all forms of racism and right-wing extremism.

"Every AfD voter should know that it is a contradiction to find Werder good and vote for the AfD," Bremen President Hubertus Hess-Grunewald once said.
