Court acquits Samsung boss in South Korea merger case. Lee Jae-yong was accused by his detractors of wanting to ensure a transfer of power to one of the descendants of the founding family.

He was released conditionally in August 2021, after serving 18 months in prison, just over half of his original sentence. In October 2022, he took over the executive presidency of Samsung Electronics, the jewel of the group, two months after the pardon of the President of South Korea. The verdict was delivered almost three years after the first hearing for this case.
