Jacob Rothschild, British financier and politician, has died. He began his career in the family bank before leaving the group to take control and chair the Rothschild Investment Trust until 2019.

He also founded the J Rothschild Assurance Group, now St James's Place. He served in the House of Lords, the upper house of the British Parliament, from 1991 to 1999. Born in Berkshire (west London) in 1936, he was educated at the elite Eton school and Oxford University.
