More than 87,000 people in Taiwan are currently without electricity. Three tsunami warnings were issued following the first violent tremor, for Taiwan, Japan and the Philippines. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later said the tsunami threat "has now passed" Taiwan's Defense Ministry reported 30 warships around the island in the 24-hour window.
