A magnitude 7.4 earthquake was recorded today on the east coast of Taiwan. The earthquake was located 18 km south-east of Hualien City, about 155 km south of the capital Taipei, at a depth of 34.8 km.

Two tsunami warnings were issued following the violent tremor - one for Taiwan and one for Japan. It was followed by a second earthquake of magnitude 6.5, which was located in the sea, 11 km north-west of HUALien City.
